Traditionally low-fat and low-calorie diets have been the recommended default diet, at least from the early1980s. This coincides with the start of the obesity epidemic. An unintended side effect of low-fat advice hasbeen the food industry’s tendency to replace fat with sugar and refined carbohydrates in processed foodproducts. This may have had adverse effects.

Modern large trials like Women’s Health Initiative, LOOK AHEAD and PREDIMED gives us a new perspective onhealthy diets, where a lower proportion of fat is not necessarily advantageous and a higher fat diet – at leastwhen considering fat quality – may have some significant advantages.

We will also look at modern trials of carbohydrate restricted diets for weight loss and diabetes type 2.
