I wonder how many people know a small slice of brown bread affects blood glucose to the same extent as three 4g teaspoons of sugar, or that 150g of boiled rice is in this respect the same as ten teaspoons of table sugar? I have reworked the calculations of the glycaemic index to reinterpret it into a form more easily understood by my patients. I have used this in my 9,000 patient primary care practice as an alternative to lifelong drugs for interested patients with type 2 diabetes for the past four years. This has resulted in improved practice figures for quality of diabetes control, yearly drug savings of over £50,000 ($63,000), significant average weight loss figures of 8.5Kg and many motivated proud patients who have taken control of their lives.
